Growing up as a teenager of Swiss-German extraction in Los Angeles a
few houses from Noel Coward and Irene Dunne, he ate cookies with his neighbor
Laura Hope Crews who was Aunt Pittypat in Gone with the Wind. He attended the
prestigious Peddie School, and was stationed as Staff Sergeant in charge of
NCOIC Operations of Air Intelligence Squadrons for nearly five years with the US
Air Force in Germany (1950-1954). Completing his tour of duty, he entered
into the 1950s underground of the LA leather scene where he and Montgomery Clift
shared a lover. With his degree in industrial psychology from UCLA (1957), he
worked in the private sector and as a probation officer with the Forestry
Service. He began his pioneering activism in the politics of gay liberation in the
early 1960s. In 1972, as president of the `Homophile Effort for Legal
Protection´ which had been founded in 1969 to defend gays during and after arrests,
he led a group in founding the H.E.L.P. Newsletter, the forebear of Drummer
(1975). As a writer and photographer, he was an essential eyewitness of the drama
and salon around Drummer in which his novels were often excerpted. His
signature "Leather Notebook" column appeared in Drummer for twelve years beginning
in 1980, and continued in Honcho to Spring 2008.
WEST VILLAGE LEATHER STREET FEST MOVES TO MEATPACKING DISTRICT

From this weeks HX magazine regarding the controversy on The West Village Leather Street Fest, part of New York Leather Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 10-12 2008
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Robert Valin, president of New York Leather Weekend, had good news to share after he and a number of his supporters spoke at Monday’s Community Board 2 Meeting to fight for the right to hold the West Village Leather Street Fest, scheduled for October 12, in the Weehawken and Christopher Streets area.

Christopher Street Business Merchants Association’s Elaine Goldman had been spearheading a campaign to stop the fest, arguing that the area no longer caters to the leather community, and that leather people belong indoors, out of the sight of children, and not on the street. Huh?!

At the meeting, Goldman, spotted in the back of the room wearing sunglasses, apparently found herself so much in the minority that she stayed quiet. Valin walked away from the meeting proudly with an excellent compromise: In exchange for a sound permit that would allow for live entertainment, as well as other future protections, the fest will now be held on the nearby stretch of West 13th Street between Washington Street and the West Side Highway—a mere stone’s throw from the original locations of the Mineshaft, the Anvil and the L.U.R.E.

For more information on the street fest and New York Leather Weekend, visit newyorkleatherweekend.com

On Saturday, July 14th, Leather Town Hall threw it's first social event, a fundraiser for The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force at The Dugout called Red, White & Leather, which was well attended by a diverse group of people from our community. Thanks to all those who made the event happen and everyone involved in making the night fun. We also raised a total of $576 for the NGLTF. I'm sure we'll have another event soon. I'll be posting some pics of the event, so stay posted. The next Leather Town Hall general meeting will be:

Thursday, July 19th
Purple Passion
211 W. 20th Street
8PM

Everyone is welcome!

Last week I suffered from a mild heart attack. Long story short, it turns out I have a genetic "mechanical" disorder in my heart that went undiagnosed for years called Atrial Fibrilation, a heart rhythm disturbance where the upper chamber of the heart contracts in a very rapid, uncoordinated manner causing blood and oxygen from being distributed properly to the body. I'm feeling well and doing real good with the exception of being tired a lot and going through a lot of tests to see what the next step is.

Thank you to everyone who's called & e mailed offering your care and expressing concern. If I haven't gotten back to you, I promise to do so shortly, but know that I'm doing fine. I may even go for a bike ride tonight!
